In the 13th century, St. Anthony of Padua, great preacher and Franciscan saint, wanted to prove the truth of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist to a stubborn nobleman who mocked the Catholic faith.
Anthony challenged the man to bring his mule — but to starve it for three days. On the appointed day, Anthony stood with the Blessed Sacrament, while the nobleman brought the hungry mule and placed a pile of fresh hay before it.
Before the eyes of the crowd, instead of rushing to eat the hay, the mule immediately knelt before the Eucharist in adoration. The nobleman, shocked and humbled, fell to his knees as well, and converted on the spot.
This miracle became one of the most famous stories of St. Anthony, showing how even creation recognizes the presence of its Creator.
