The Miracle of St. Teresa of Ávila and the Transverberation

St. Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582), a great mystic and Doctor of the Church, experienced one of the most profound mystical events in Christian tradition, known as the Transverberation — the “piercing of the heart.”

She described a vision in which an angel appeared to her, holding a golden spear tipped with fire.

The angel pierced her heart with it, leaving her overwhelmed with both immense pain and indescribable love for God.

Teresa later wrote that the experience united her completely with God in a burning ecstasy of divine love and suffering.

After her death, her heart was examined and indeed showed a mysterious wound, confirming her testimony.

This miracle has become a powerful symbol of mystical union with God and the transformative power of divine love
