In 1240, the army of Emperor Frederick II attacked the town of Assisi.
The soldiers reached the convent of San Damiano, where St. Clare of Assisi and her sisters lived in prayer.
As the invaders prepared to break in, Clare, who was sick and weak at the time, asked to be carried to the chapel.
She held the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance and, kneeling before it, prayed for protection.
According to the witnesses, as Clare lifted the monstrance, a dazzling light shone from the Eucharist.
The soldiers, terrified and blinded, suddenly retreated and abandoned their attack.
This miracle strengthened devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and showed the extraordinary faith and courage of St. Clare.
